Wellbeing

We pride ourselves on working both on academic learning and social and emotional wellbeing.

From the start of your child’s time with us at Churwell Primary Academy we support children to with their wellbeing development. From the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum we enable children to develop their social, self-care and independence skills. Alongside this, we have a programme of wellbeing that supports their emotional literacy, so that they can recognise and talk about their thoughts and feelings.

Every day, all children across the Academy access a daily session of Mindfulness and an In the Zones Check in. Alongside this, there are weekly personal, social and emotional lessons delivered through be-spoke teaching and the One Decision programme. All children also have a dedicated session on E-Safety delivered through the Evolve programme.

We also work with external agencies to deliver sessions on first aid, peer pressure and healthy relationships.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is originally a Buddhist term and is defined as:

…the energy of attention.  It is the capacity in each of us to be present one hundred percent to what is happening within and around us.  It allows us to become fully alive in each moment. It is the essential basis for healing and transforming ourselves and creating more harmony in our family, our work life, and our society.

The children access a mindfulness session after lunch, each day.

This allows children to focus on their mental well-being and understand how to keep their mind healthy. These sessions support with a sense of calmness and ‘pressing pause’ in a busy day.

The children are taken through a series of activities each day that allow them to develop mindfulness techniques. These include:

  • A breathing activity
  • A grounding exercise
  • A guided meditation
  • A positive affirmation
  • A yoga activity

The children can use any of these strategies, at any time of the day to press pause and to take a moment.

Zones of Regulation

We use Zones of Regulation in school to support children with their emotional literacy. It is important for children to identify how they feel and to have their feelings validated.

The children have a dedicated ‘In the Zone’ check in every day after lunchtime.

This session supports the adults to guide children through the zones, labelling feelings and thoughts assoiated with this, and opening up discussion about how we can regulate ourselves to back in the green zone.

This is what children in the Academy say about Zones of Regulation:
